RATIONALE

The Division of Policy Development and Law was established to strengthen UNEP´s ability to:

  • Contribute to the global environmental agenda by improving the link between the scientific community and policy makers basing policy development on emerging environmental challenges.
  • Enhance policy review and law analysis functions; promote policy dialogue with major stakeholders; and articulate UNEP policy positions on a range of critical environmental and sustainable development issues.
  • Ensure the coordination of environmental policy development and enforcement through the involvement of the Environmental Management Group (EMG) and interagency mechanisms that include relevant intergovernmental and regional bodies and other major groups.
  • Further develop environmental law and policies to promote sustainable development, including legal instruments at the global, regional and national levels.
  • Improve the integration of work related to legal, economic, financial and other policy instruments.
  • Provide a coherent and consistent basis for policy and law implementation activities.
  • Cooperate in the development and implementation of environmental policy and law dealing with cross-sectoral environmental issues such as poverty and environment, health and environment, urban issues and environment, and education and training, among others.
