Introduction to the Manifesto for Life:
Ethics for Sustainability

The Thirteenth Forum of Ministers of the Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean held in Rio de Janeiro in October 2001 agreed "To carry out special efforts in order to address the ethical principles that shall provide the basis of the Environmental Regional Action Plan, and that shall be reflected in the environmental and sustainable development policies of the countries in our region," and "To summon a Regional Symposium on Ethical Principles and Sustainable Development to discuss this issue and draft proposals aimed at the mainstreaming of our region's contribution to the Johannesburg Summit on Sustainable Development."

In keeping with this decision, the Colombian Ministry of the Environment, together with UNEP and The Earth Council, and under the sponsorship of UNDP, ECLAC and The World Bank, called for a Symposium on Environmental Ethics and Sustainable Development, held in Bogotá, Colombia, on 2-4 May 2002.

The Symposium, chaired by the Minister of the Environment of Colombia, gathered a select group of 35 figures from the public policy sector and the civil society, including governments, international organisations, scientific and academic institutions, and NGOs. Several social actors also attended, including Parliamentarians, educators, commentators and interest groups representatives (businesspeople, political leaders, indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants). The Symposium generated a dialogue and debate over the ethical principles that shall mainstream the commitments and practices of the main actors and interest groups involved in the economic, social and environmental management of sustainable development. The ideas and proposals that resulted from such debate led the participants to draft a Manifesto for Life: Ethics for Sustainability.

We kindly invite you to read the Manifesto. Please feel free to subscribe its contents by filling out the endorsement format. An up-dated list with the names of those who have joined the "Manifesto for Life: Ethics for Sustainability" is also available.
