CLIMATE CHANGE

Importance
Climate change is the most important challenge of the 21st Century. It questions the sustainability of life on this planet.

The Challenge
To reduce at least 50% of current greenhouse gas emissions and to stabilize Carbon Dioxide concentrations. To change the current practice of development and consumption based on the heavy use of fossil fuels, deforestation and agriculture with high inputs of chemical fertilizers. To act in accordance with international agreements.

PNUMA
The work of PNUMA is focused on supporting regional governments and their citizens by: Helping them to understand the problem Finding solutions Compiling answers.

Some of PNUMA's activities
Support the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change
Disemina información ambiental, realiza evaluaciones y alerta a la población en caso de riesgos
Look for solutions
Develop tools for better research and understanding of Climate Change
Promote the use of renewable energies and cleaner production.
Increase the ability of countries to make inventories regarding greenhouse gases.

On a regional level:
Organize the Forum of Ministers of the environment in Latin American and the Caribbean.
Climate Change is an important issue in the Regional plan of action
Support the development of meetings between experts and negotiators from countries in the region to build common positions with regard to international negotiations. UNEP and UNDP have supported preparatory meetings previously at the Conferences of the parties (Cops) 4, 5 and 6, various meetings about the Kyoto Protocol and the Clean development mechanism. It supports strategic studies about vulnerability, risk management and adaptation to climate change, energy planning and the use of cleaner production.

The Forum of Ministers of the environment in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the 12th meeting in Bridgetown, Barbados 2000, the ministers committed to:

Establishing an intergovernmental task force specifically for climate change coordinated by Argentina and Bolivia. .
Promoting the implementation of the Convention in the United Nations about climate change and the enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol.
Developing common positions in terms of the clean development mechanism, forestry and the prevention of gas emissions or coal extraction.
Asking suppliers to provide new and additional resources for countries that apply measures in order to accomplish the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol.

Some difficulties in the region
Availability of financial and human resources in some countries. Variety in the impact of action in countries with relative levels of development and different resources.
