SUSTAINABLE CITIES
The Importance of Cities

Cities carry out a vital function in the current model of development. They attract population growth leading them to be important centres of socioeconomic richness. 75% of the population in Latin America live in cities (64% in Mexico). Cities generate 95% of the GNP in Mexico.

The Challenge

Respond to the objectives in Programme 21
Urban problems could present a serious obstacle to the potential socioeconomic contribution by cities. Environmental deterioration brings with it enormous costs that significantly reduce the tapping of local resources. It also accentuates a lack of equality and compromises the success of sustainable development.

Sustainable Cities Programme

Objective:
It creates the necessary capacity for urban planning and development on a local, national and regional level.

The programme is also a forum where everyone can express their opinion and through which they can mobilize and apply different local resources.

The SCP encourages the participation of those directly interested from all parts of urban society in order to guarantee sustainable and fair development.

Strategy

Technical Cooperation: 95% of the sustainable cities programme’s resources are channelled towards the council sector to strengthen the ability and competition of council authorities and their associates in the public, private and community sectors in planning and environmental development.

Creation of local Training: on a local level, the sustainable cities programme is primarily concerned with reconciling the interests of the different sectors.

Interinstitutional Cooperation: The sustainable cities programme mobilises technical and financial resources and facilitates the practical application of technical and specialized knowledge on a local level.

Global Links: The sustainable cities programme encourages and facilitates the exchange of general and specialized knowledge between cities throughout the world.
