UNEP Senior Management Team Meeting

The UNEP Senior Management Team Meeting, (SMT) took place in Nairobi, Kenya, 12-16 January 2009.

The strategic presence of UNEP and “Delivering as One” constituted the most relevant themes. Also, the transition phase that UNEP is embarking on was discussed, in order to work according to the Work Plan 2010-2011 and the Mid Term Strategy of the organization.

Indigenous Communities Workshops and Climate Change

The first informative workshop for indigenous communities based on the REDD proposal and Climate Change, took place in the City of Panama, at the Smithsonian Center.

More than a hundred people from the Emberá, Wounaan, Kuna, Ngôbe- Buglé, Naso and Bribri communities of the Panama Republic participated, as well as delegates from organized indigenous student and workers associations, youth movements and associations and indigenous community leaders.

The regional office had an active participation in this meeting and the Information Officer gave a presentation on Climate Change and its impact on the region’s agriculture.

La Prensa and UNEP/ROLAC Agreement

Recently an agreement was established between the La Prensa Newspaper of Panama, its supplement for children, APRENDO, and the UNEP Regional Office, by which UNEP and the Mexican Cartel International Biennial grants its rights over a series of posters to the APRENDO weekly so that it may reproduce and distribute them in around 300 schools in Panama.

In this way it seeks to make teachers and children aware of environmental themes, its problems and possible solutions.

Titicaca Project

A series of activities have taken place in the month of January relating to the Titicaca Lake Project. Amongst them we can mention the consummation of an agreement between UNEP and the Vice Minister of Biodiversity, Forestry and the Environment (VBRFMA) of Bolivia that establishes a structure for the participation of the focal point of this project in this country.

Meanwhile, a similar agreement is under way with the Environment Minister of Peru.
